Getting ready for the Suhanko mine

-project

Suhanko Arctic Platinum Oy is preparing to open the Suhanko mine in Ranua. Suhanko has the largest palladium deposit in Europe. The company aims to make an investment decision and start construction of the mine in 2024. The construction phase is estimated to take 2-3 years and employ around 1 000 people. The direct employment impact of an operational mine will be around 400 person-years and the estimated operational life is over 20 years.

The Suhanko mine preparation study project is implemented by the municipality of Ranua. In the study project, the municipality of Ranuwa, in cooperation with the mining company and the entrepreneurs, residents and other actors in Ranuwa, will identify, anticipate and prepare for the positive changes in the operating environment brought about by the Suhanko mine by means of three packages of measures and supporting communication. The packages of measures are Inclusion, Meeting Service Needs and Access to Skilled Labour. Through these packages, the project will engage Ranua's entrepreneurs, residents and other actors and stakeholders and identify the needs for the development of services and access to labour.

The concrete output of the implementation of the study project's packages of measures is the Ranuan mining programme, a picture of the future and a programme of measures, the updating of which will be synchronised in the future, for example, with the municipality's economic programme. The implementation of the project measures will support the sustainable growth and vitality of the municipality of Ranua. The attractiveness and holding power of Ranua will be strengthened and the positive cycle of development in the municipality will be accelerated.

The cost of the project is estimated at 92 049 euros, of which the Lapland Regional Council has granted AKKE funding of 80% (73 639 euros), while the municipality of Ranua is providing 15% (13 808 euros) and companies 5% (4 602 euros). The project will run from 1.1. to 31.12.2023.
