–We have various natural resources in Ranua, the rational use of which must be possible. The project explores how peatlands and peatland biomass could be utilised," Nurmela says.

The research team of the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) visited two swamps and one peat production area to collect samples.

Ranua is traditionally known for jam, but there would also be new business opportunities in the marshes of the locality. This was evident at the Swamp Seminar, which took place in Ranua on 22 September.

"There is clearly a market, and we have raw material in Ranua," says Mikko Pöykkö, Business Ranua's Development Manager.

The journey of a swamp biomass from raw material to product requires many different methods and equipment depending on what the final product is.

A nature-based entrepreneur can therefore be, for example, a raw material collector, a semi-farmer, a food, care services, handicraft or tourism entrepreneur. The common and central production factor of all these enterprises is Finnish nature.
