Biochar and synthetic fuels - enablers of new industrial activity in Lapland

The municipality of Ranua and Ranuan Infra Oy are involved in a project implemented jointly by Kemi Digipolis Oy and the Natural Resources Institute of Finland, which focuses on exploring the potential of biochar production and synthetic fuel manufacturing in Lapland, while also highlighting new business opportunities.

The versatile uses of biochar in industry, agriculture and green building will enable the development of significant commercial activities in Lapland, where biomass is abundant. The project will also explore the production of synthetic fuels in Lapland, taking advantage of the region's renewable energy sources and heavy industry. The target groups of the project are industrial and municipal actors, SMEs, transport, logistics and energy companies in the region. The results will provide decision-makers with information on the production and use of biochar and synthetic fuels, contributing to the sustainable development of the region. The aim is to support Lapland's green transition, improve the region's energy self-sufficiency and increase knowledge on the sufficiency and sustainable use of biomass.
